Mexico City’s San Pablo Lutheran Church and Buen Pastor Lutheran Church reach out to their communities every summer through vacation Bible school programs. This year a team from Lutheran Hour Ministries partnered with both congregations to add a special element of holistic education.
LHM—Mexico’s first contribution to the congregations’ VBS efforts was to promote the event. Specially designed announcements attracted children from the neighborhoods around each congregation.
“Last year 13 children attended the VBS at Buen Pastor, but this year the attendance nearly doubled!” the LHM team says. “Good community outreach and a strong relationship with the pastor helped.”
Each congregation presented a curriculum that focused on three things:
1. Receiving and sharing God’s grace
2. Sharing God’s love with our neighbors
3. Learning to share with friends and classmates.
Activities included puppet and clown skits by a drama troupe called the Parable Company—plus a dental hygiene workshop led by Lutheran Hour Ministries volunteers Omega and Neftali, both of whom are dental health professionals.
“We participated in teaching the children proper dental hygiene techniques as part of taking care of God’s creation, which we are a part of,” says Omega. “We gave out toothbrusheds to the participants and toothpaste after they showed us how to peroperly brush their teeth.”
The LHM team also assisted with the July VBS program of San Pedro Lutheran Church, where LHM—Mexico is located. For more on Lutheran Hour Ministries—Mexico’s community outreach through its partnerships with congregations of the Lutheran Synod of Mexico, visit cptlnmexico.wordpress.com.
