Members of 2014 Michigan Volunteer Team to Guatemala Offer Final Reflections

Guatemala July 2014_Final CollageOur Volunteer Team from Faith Lutheran Church, Grand Blanc, Mich. has returned safely home. In today’s post they offer some final thoughts on their mission experience. We give thanks for their service, their mission hearts and God’s protection and great blessings during their trip.

“I came not really knowing what to expect. Then I arrived and meeting the people I was excited to give them a gift of a new roof. By the end of the week I was the one who received the gift of love.” —Tim Turner

“It’s all about God! We saw his incredible love pour out through the smiles, hugs and laughter of the staff and children of World’s Redeemer Lutheran School and through the wonderful meals made by the Mayan women for lunch. Praise God for the opportunity to serve Him by doing VBS and the roof construction project for the school. Again, it was hard to say goodbye, but memories of the week will always remain.” —Dick Gookin

“What stands out from the week for me was the deep appreciation and gratitude that was shown to us by everyone we came in contact with, especially when we had to say goodbye. Although we may have had a language barrier, it was not difficult to see how thankful they were that we came to Guatemala and for the support of our Faith congregation. The looks on their faces and the sincere hugs told the story. This will remain in my memory always.” —Nan Gookin

“The highlights of my week: being a part of the team that came closer together during the week and seeing the tears of joy and thankfulness from the children and members of Santiago Zamora World’s Redeemer Lutheran Church and School.” —Dar Norrington

“We are called to harvest the crop when it is ready. I thank LHM for being the bridge to the field.” —Karter Huber

“We were able to proclaim God’s love through our words and actions, simply because we were willing vessels. God changed our hearts and the hearts of those people we came in contact with.” —Ann Huber

“Going down to Guatemala, I wasn’t quite sure what God had planned for me. Now that I’m home, I know it was to leave my heart in Guatemala: with the kids, with the guides, with the land, and all the people! The love I gave and the love I received were exactly why God had me on this great mission team.” —Kara Huber

“When I was reflecting on the week and the lessons God sent with us to share, I saw a lesson He gave through the team. We talked about love and God’s love—and how far it will go. The more we share, the farther love goes. Through our team we also showed that love not only goes farther; it gets stronger. Each team is special with unique talents brought together. This team is, by far, the most cohesive and strongest team we’ve had. I feel very blessed to be a part of Team 2014. Gracias!” —Mia Hubert

“We went, we shared, we served, we were blessed!” —Gerry Survant

“What a blessing this week has been! God brought together the perfect team to carry out His mission work in Guatemala, from the skills of the construction workers, to the leadership of VBS and Project JOEL, our song and devotional leaders, and our translators. It was amazing to watch the transformation of the faces of the students throughout the week as they were ‘filled with God’s love.’ Thank you Lord, LHM and Faith Lutheran Church for giving us this opportunity to share the love of our gracious God!” —Becky Survant

At Lutheran Hour Ministries, we offer prayers of praise and thanksgiving for the hard work of the staff and volunteers at Cristo Para Todas Las Naciones (LHM)—Guatemala. All of our ministry centers put significant planning and effort into hosting volunteer teams and providing them with the highest quality hands-on ministry experience possible. We pray, too, that the Holy Spirit continues to touch many lives with the Gospel through the partnership of Lutheran Hour Ministries—Guatemala and Faith Lutheran Church, Grand Blanc, Mich.
