During August 2013, Rev. Elifasi Lugowo traveled from Lusaka, Zambia to Lilongwe, Malawi with his colleague, Senior Pastor Rev. Alfred Chana. The two pastors from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Zambia came to take part in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Malawi’s Church Assembly and 30th Anniversary celebrations.

They would return to Zambia freshly equipped for outreach.

Malawi and Zambia are neighboring countries in southern Africa. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Malawi (ELCM) and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Zambia (ELCZa) were founded at about the same time—the ELCM in 1982 and the ELCZa in 1983. While the Malawian church has grown to a membership of more than 100,000, the Zambian church has struggled.

At the 2013 Assembly events, Rev. Elifasi visited the popular Lutheran Hour Ministries—Malawi display and discovered that LHM staff and volunteers were giving away free copies of the ministry center’s materials.

“There was a bit of a scramble for the free booklets!” says LHM—Malawi Audience Relations Manager Aubrey Bunguzu. “Rev. Elifasi requested some booklets too, saying he wanted to use them to witness through Bible studies at his church.”

Just a month later in September, Rev. Elifasi was back in Lilongwe, Malawi attending a seminar, and during a break he sought out LHM—Malawi’s Audience Relations office.

“These booklets are very powerful tools for evangelism!” he told Aubrey Bunguzu. “They are good for organizing prayer groups: not only are they straightforward, but they’re in the Malawian Chichewa language—which is also understood by Zambians.

I have experienced a growing spirit among church members after using these booklets!” he said.

The Malawi ministry center staff was eager to help fuel Rev. Elifasi’s enthusiasm—so they provided him with even more materials.

“We have since given Rev. Elifasi Lugowo a bundle of 200 booklets from our ‘Real Life’ series,” says Bunguzu. “Rev. Elifasi plans to organize more Bible groups in Zambia and report his progress to the ministry center.

“—Probably with photos attached!” Bunguzu added.
