Last week, Dr. Douglas Rutt, the International Director for Lutheran Hour Ministries paid a visit to the ministry center in Tijuana, Mexico. He was accompanied by the Area Counselor for Latin America, Rev. Nilo Figur, and LHM—Mexico Director, Melissa Salomon, as they visited with local church partners and ministry sites.
“I was impressed by the challenge of proclaiming the gospel in the unique context of the border region between Mexico and the United States,” said Dr. Rutt. “One strategy that has been implemented by our Ministry Center staff that has been especially encouraging was Project JOEL, in which young people are reached through classes in the martial arts. They learn self-respect and discipline, but also the gospel, which helps to prepare the youth to be good citizens of Mexico, but also of God’s kingdom.”
