A youth mission team from LHM—Guatemala traveled for nearly 12 hours on a Sunday to provide a bilingual Vacation Bible School (VBS) program in Las Pacayas that lasted Monday through Friday. The theme of the workshops was “The Whole Armor of God,” in reference to Ephesians 6:10-20.
In the mornings, 238 children ages 4 to 9 years old enjoyed the activities, and in the afternoons, events were geared for older kids between the ages of 10 to 14, and 195 children were in attendance for those sessions.
The goal of this program was to help children flourish in their faith. “We want them to have the personal experience of being proud to be – and be called – Christians,” said Rebeca de Franco, director of LHM—Guatemala. “So we went out to be a living testimony!”
To close out the VBS, the mission team and all the participants paraded the streets singing “We are the soldiers of God!”
De Franco said, “Everyone in the mission team (including me) and the local volunteers had tears in our eyes because we were so impressed by the children singing and declaring that ‘they are soldiers of God!’ We can be sure that these children never forget that!”
Afterward, each child received a parting gift set that included a t-shirt,candies, and school items, which were donated by Faith Lutheran School in Grand Blanc, Mich., which visited LHM—Guatemala on a mission trip in August. Children also received activity books on the topic of accepting others.
